Simenon is an amazing writer, no question He really understands people and what makes them tick, his descriptions make his novels come completely alive His plots are inventive and original. In this one, he has to come out of retirement to save his nephew, who s been framed for murder He kind of lurches through the book, a retired policeman who feels correctly that many of his old colleagues are NOT happy to see him hanging around the police station He isn t sure until the very end how he s going to solve the case and save his wife s sister s son who he doesn t really even like It seemed like a very realistic picture of the awkwardness of leaving a job and then coming back, temporarily I think this is actually one of the first if not the first Maigret it s just called Maigret on the cover and it was published in 1934 Anyone out there know if that s a correct theory This was a fine old Maigret mystery It s the first I ve read in many years I think I ve read a dozen of them and i found myself disliking Maigret for the first time because I now dislike Simenon so much I read his autobio several years ago he really was an amazing creep I just purchased several new used Maigrets and am looking forward to reading them and to overcoming my aversion to the author.
